How to Join the MMDL

This page has been created to answer the most common and basic questions about joining the MMDL, but many other answers can be found in our Official League Rules.

Basic League Information

There are two (2) seasons per year, Fall and Spring
The number of players to field a team is a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10. All players must be at least 21 years of age (exceptions to the age – contact your Area Director)
There are various division levels ranging from Expert to Beginner
There are four (4) regional areas of the league: Boston, Central, South Shore, and North Shore
The fall season typically starts the first week of September and Spring Season typically starts the first week of February
Team roster application forms must be submitted at the Regional Area captain’s meetings. These meetings are typically held the first week of August for the Fall season and the first week of January for the Spring season.
The regular season is 14 to 15 weeks (split between home and away matches) and playoffs can add up to an additional six (6) weeks of play
Matches are played on Tuesday evenings, but some teams play on alternate nights if Tuesday is not available at their sponsor (please note this as a request on your team application form)
Matches start at 7:30 pm and are typically finished by 10:30-11:00 pm
Match format is 12 games, teams earn one point per set. A match is composed of 3 sets of Doubles 501, 3 set of Doubles Cricket, and 6 sets of 01 Singles. Please see the league rules for complete information on match format.
Team sponsor fee is $200 per team
Player Fee of $2/player on the roster form
Teams will win shirts and plaques depending on where they finish, and individual players can earn plaques to recognize accomplishments such as Ton80s, Rounds of Nine, High Out, and 6 Corks.

Who are MMDL sponsors?

MMDL sponsors include pubs and restaurants as well as private clubs and organizations (such as Elks, Moose, Veterans, Eagles, Lions, etc.), all of which have one (1) or more dartboards that are appropriate for league play (please refer to our rules, Article II, “Equipment”). You can sponsor up to two (2) teams per board.

What are the benefits of being a sponsor?

Choosing to become an MMDL sponsor is a smart business decision that pays you back in multiple ways. Benefits of sponsorship include:

Guaranteed additional business on one of your slower weeknights (Between 12 and 18 additional customers per team sponsored for a minimum of 7 weeks); even more if your team(s) qualify for the playoffs
Away teams that bring in new faces and potential new customers
Exposure to over 3000 of our league members
Encourages customer loyalty, pride and sense of community within your establishment
MMDL is one of the most prestigious leagues of its kind in the world, teeming with local history and tradition and would welcome you as part of our league family.

What is the "house round" tradition and am I obligated to participate?

On league night, the host sponsor typically provides a free bar round for both participating teams (between 12 and 18 players). While this is not a requirement, it is very rare for sponsors to opt-out of this tradition. Some sponsors replace the bar round with pizzas or other types of food (takeout if there is no house kitchen) and some very generous sponsors provide both free food and a round. Again, this is all up to the individual establishment and does vary.

What is the sponsorship fee?

The sponsorship fee is $200 per team, per season. If the fee is raised, it will be printed on the team roster application.

I have a dartboard set up, but I need a team to play for me. What do I do?

If you have patrons that play darts, start with them and see if they’d like to play in the league. If you need to find more players, you can:

What are the steps I should follow if I would like to become a sponsor?

Sign up for the league email list or if you prefer, twitter feed. This will make sure you receive notification of new season dates, captain’s meetings, and other important information.
When the new season announcement is sent out, make note of the captain’s meeting dates and make sure the team captain(s) or another representative attends. If the new season info is ready, it will be listed in the “season” drop-down menu above.
Download the team roster forms and have your team’s captain fill them out completely with all information required from all team players.
Make sure the captain has the sponsor’s check to bring to the first captain’s meeting. There is a $25 late penalty for teams that do not submit their checks on time.

Who plays in the MMDL?

Anyone who loves to play darts and is at least 21 years of age can have fun in the MMDL. Men, women and even those with disabilities have played darts in the league, there is no experience necessary.

I don’t have a sponsor, how can I find one?

Go out to one of the weekly Luck of the Draw tournaments and ask other players if they know places you could play.

What are a team captain’s basic responsibilities?

Assemble team, line up sponsorship payment, and attend captain’s meetings.
Distribute match schedules to teammates and assist with transportation needs.
Determine lineups and fill out match reports (this may be delegated or shared with teammates if desired)
Ensure the smooth running of all matches and adherence to league rules.
Make sure a chalker is assigned during your team’s turn to chalk.
Resolve any disputes in private conference with opposing team’s captain
Receive league emails and other communications and relay announcements and information to team members.
Communicate with Area Director on any issues, including rules clarifications, points and standings discrepancies, roster changes, and playoff participation.

I am an experienced player, what division should I play in?

If you have previous dart league experience, you should be able to judge if you belong in a top division like A or Super A, a middle-level division like B or C or a beginner’s level division like D or E. Teams can request division placement, but ultimately the Area Director will assign you to a division based on your entire team’s skill level.
